New York City is Sinking, and No One Knows What to Do

New York City was proactive on tackling climate change risks long before HurricaneSandy wreaked havoc across the boroughs in autumn 2012. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his successor, Bill De Blasio, have shown leadership on climate change resilience that inspired other cities to launch similar long-term plans.

Nevertheless, the evidence suggests the city will become more submerged as this century progresses, and city leaders and citizens are still unprepared for this eventuality.

Study: Full moon can trigger big earthquakes

High tides, which typically occur twice a day, are caused when ocean water is moved by the gravitational pull of the moon. But twice a month, during a full or new moon, tides are especially high because the moon, earth and sun all line up together. (These twice-monthly tides are known as "spring" tides.)

Big quakes can occur when this additional weight of tidal water strains geological faults, according to the study. Though this theory is not new, this is the first study to display a firm, statistical link.

Sailors, cargo stranded at sea amid global shipper's bankruptcy

One of the world's largest shipping companies is sinking in a sea of red ink, leaving sailors and cargo stranded in vessels anchored offshore and merchants worrying they won't get goods in time for holiday shopping.

South Korea's Hanjin Shipping, the world's No. 7 shipping company, is in bankruptcy and has more than 40 massive container ships stranded at sea. It's estimated they're carrying $14 billion worth of goods -- everything from Samsung electronics and Nike sneakers to furniture and food.

River in Russia Mysteriously Turns Blood Red

Startled residents of a Russian city inside the Arctic Circle have been posting photos of a local river that has mysteriously turned blood red.

Photos published on Russian social media appear to the show the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk flowing vivid burgundy. Russian authorities have yet to establish a reason for the river’s unusual appearance, but local people quickly linked it to a giant metals plant upstream. Russia's Environment Ministry said it was investigating a plant leak as the likely cause.

Newton responsible for at least 5 deaths; storm pushes rains into U.S. Southwest

Post-tropical cyclone Newton continued its push northeast on Wednesday after striking Mexico's Pacific coast again, killing at least five people and pushing rains into the southwestern United States.

A shrimp boat capsized in the Gulf of California amid rough seas, killing two and leaving three missing. BBC News reported that officials said the five boaters ignored warnings against going out to sea.

Is China Trying to Bankrupt the American Economy?

Why does it seem like almost everything is made in China these days? Yesterday I was looking at some pencils that we had lying around the house and I noticed that they had been manufactured in China. I remarked to my wife that it was such a shame that they don't make pencils in the United States anymore. At another point during the day, I turned over my television remote and I noticed that it also had "Made in China" engraved on it.

Hermine barrels north leaves more than 200,000 without power

Hurricane Hermine slammed into Florida leaving nearly 200,000 people across four states without power and caused dozens of towns in its path to evacuate as it continues to cause chaos on its way into Georgia and the Carolinas.

The Category 1 storm hit just east of St. Marks around 1.30am EDT with winds around 80mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Wars start when trade stops
