A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of Monday morning in the Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain, 100 miles south-east of Malaga, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The shallow quake hit at 4.22am 39 miles (62km) north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 101 miles (164km) east-southeast of Gibraltar, USGS said. It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor.
